MeProRisk II

Optimization strategies and risk analysis for deep geothermal reservoirs

Geothermal reservoirs provide heat that can be used to generate clean, renewable, and plentiful energy. However, the exploration and the development of these reservoirs involve high engineering and economic risks. Despite steady improvements in drilling technology over the last decades, drilling of numerous deep boreholes from the surface into suitable rock types at a depth of some kilometers is still a major cost component of geothermal energy. The MeProRisk II project aims at reducing these risks by combining skills from different scientific disciplines. Geophysicists, mathematicians, and computer scientists from five German universities and a private company develop and apply new methods in seismic modeling and interpretation, numerical reservoir simulation, estimation of petrophysical parameters, and scientific visualization. The research activities at Friedrich Schiller University Jena include automatic differentiation, parallel computing, and optimal experimental design.

TerraSensE

Terrestrische Sensorik für hochaufgelöste Analytik von Erdoberflächenprozessen

Im Rahmen von TerraSensE sollen unter spezifischen wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen räumlich hoch aufgelöste Zeitreihen zur Erdoberflächendynamik erhoben und analysiert werden. Diese Zeitreihen tragen, auch in Kombination mit flugzeug- und satellitengestützten Fernerkundungsdaten, zu einem besseren Verständnis der raumzeitlichen Prozessdynamik der Bio-Geosphäre bei. Da multi-temporale, räumlich hoch aufgelöste Daten besondere Ansprüche an das Datenmanagement und die Datenanalyse stellen, werden hierzu auch neue Techniken aus der Informatik entwickelt. Mit dem Aufbau diese interdisziplinären Kooperation zwischen Geographie, Geowissenschaften und Informatik sollen verstärkt Folgeprojekte initiiert werden.

Hydro-Informatik als Rüstzeug gegen Donauhochwasser

Die Donauhochwasser zählen zu den größten Flutkatastrophen, die die Menschheit je heimgesucht haben. Ihre Auswirkungen auf den Lebens- und Wirtschaftsraum Donau überschreiten Staatsgrenzen und sind zudem oft verheerend. Moderne Methoden der Informatik und Mathematik erlauben die computergesteuerte Vorausberechnung von Hochwassern und helfen so, die zugrundeliegenden Phänomene realitätsnah zu simulieren und damit besser zu verstehen.

Heute werden solche Simulationsmodelle für örtlich begrenzte Bereiche der Donau erfolgreich zur Hochwasserprognose eingesetzt. Es fehlt jedoch ein Computermodell, das die Donau von der Quelle bis zur Mündung in ihrer Gesamtheit im Rechner abbildet. Ein solches Modell des "Gesamtsystems Donau" war bisher aufgrund seiner hohen Anforderungen an Speicher und Rechenzeit unvorstellbar. Die rasante bisherige Zunahme der Leistungsfähigkeit von Supercomputern sowie die sich abzeichnenden Trends in der zukünftigen Rechnertechnologie rücken die Realisierung eines solchen Modells heute jedoch in greifbare Nähe.

Ziel der beantragten Initiative ist es, eine multilaterale und interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit im Bereich der Hydro-Informatik neu aufzubauen, die die Machbarkeit eines solchen digitalen Gesamtmodells evaluiert und einen Folgeantrag zur Förderung von entsprechenden Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeiten erstellt.

ReceptorLight

CRC 166 Project Z2: Integrative Data Management and Processing

Joint project of

In the newly established Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) "High-end light microscopy elucidates membrane receptor function (ReceptorLight)," scientists from Jena and Würzburg are analyzing the function of membrane receptors using the most modern light microscopy. The overall objective of this research initiative is to gain new insight into the underlying physical and biological phenomena and the advancement of high-performance light microscopy. The volume of the resulting data sets will be large. Currently, we expect to record multi-petabyte data. In addition to the sheer size, the research activities will also need to focus on the variety of data. The aim of project Z2 is to design, implement, and deploy a CRC-wide software platform to store, manage, share, and process data of all CRC projects. The platform will ensure reproducibility and sustainability of research results. It will also allow for an interactive access and will enable a systematic analysis of the large and heterogeneous data. Thus, this project will not only provide participating scientists with a tool to organize and analyze their data, but also foster the exchange of tools and the sharing of knowledge.
